About three days ago our store was quite busy. There were about 13 tables inside and outside. We were just 6 staffs, 2 for kitchen, 2 for inside including barista and counter for take away service , and 2 for outside who another one is still new.
We did our best and support each other in a limited infrastructure ( read : shortage of staff, broken coffee machine, etc ). Unlike fast food or any other coffee shops which have self service system for customer, we give full service as our main idea.
While handling one table giving the bill and clearing up the dishes on their table, there was a big guy with sunglasses came and called me and asked me to lift the table transferring it. He would join the big table we had last time. He came with two ladies and I think one of both was a nanny with a baby. Her face look similar my face, I guessed she’s Filipina or Indonesian.
I stopped my activities that moment and immediately tried to lift the table. However, the ways going to the place where I needed to transfer the table were blocked by another tables. I needed to pass the long way which was a bit hard. no body I can ask for any assistance while my colleagues were all busy too. Suddenly, a guy sitting close by the big table offered some help and immediately lifted the table passing his table. You know what happened then ? The guy who asked me lifting the table was upset and said in anger to the guy who helped me !!
He said : " Why you lift the table ? "
another guy said : " Why not? you need the table, it's hard for her to lift it. I'm just trying to help ! "
and then, he said again : It's not your business ! it's her business ! "The lady sitting with the guy who helped me tried to convince : " She's just a small girl ! Don't you see that ! " She said while pointing me.
I said thank you to the guy who helped me, and the lady sitting with him said in a low voice to me : " He's an Idiot ! " I said : "It's alright, madam "I heard the guy who helped me said to the lady : " Wow, I embarrassed my self today by lifting the table ! " I know he's upset to the guy and I can see his red eyes and face, while trying to control his emotion and manage his breath.
Guys, it's just an example how people treat another people who are just having low job; waiter, construction labor, housemaid, shop keeper, office boy, doorman, cleaning service, security guard,etc. Don't feel bad when you have such an experience. I have a lot of experiences how sometimes the customers treat us in a bad way. However, that's alright. No body can put you down except your self. Do your job in a professional way with love, gratitude and dignity of honesty in persistence. That's you must be proud of; not money, neither family status nor your blood status nor heredity nor skin color, etc.
